Walking along the National Mall in Washington D.C. food trucks and vendors are a common sight. Even with an immense magnitude of vendors to choose from, there is little variety. The Pie Man of D.C. sets himself apart from this monotony. He is a perfect example of a man who had an innovative business idea and took it to market. Our original idea for an innovative business was an escape room company, however, the Pie Man set himself apart to a larger degree and drew us in. Several things are innovative about his business. His product which are the pies he sells are unique in his area. All other food vendors on the streets sell food such as hamburgers, hotdogs, pizza, and ice cream with very few that expand on this and none others that sell pies. On top of this, the variety in the types of pies he sells is incredible with a total of 24 unique flavors. The standard pie is made with Navy Beans and forms the base for all the other flavors which include classics like apple, cherry, and blueberry in addition to more unique flavors like sweet potato bean and butterscotch. The product is unique and make this street vendor stand out as well as making it unique in the grocery stores and gas stations where they are also sold. The marketing of the pies is done with a flare. The Pie Man himself who's real name is Carvelas Mohannad, stands outside his stand shouting his slogan "Don't be shy, taste this pie." A slogan was something no other vendor had, or at least didn't display or shout which is another thing that set him apart. He was the only vendor actively trying to get people to come towards him, all the other trucks and vendors were silent unless a customer directly approached them. The Pie Man was the opposite, approaching you and even changing his marketing to individual customers. This happened to me and I found it quite remarkable. He asked how tall I was which is a normal question I get asked but he went a step further by making claims such as if I taste this pie, I would grow five more inches and be in the NBA. While this was obviously a false claim, it did accomplish his goal of getting me, and my group, over to his stand to "Taste this pie." Whether this is part of the business marketing strategy or just the unique character of the founder can be debated, yet it is another reason why the Pie Man of D.C. sets himself and his business apart from the crowd. By my estimate, my group and I passed about 30 food trucks or outdoor vendors while walking in D.C. only two of them offered free samples in order to draw customers in, the Pie Man being one of them. This makes his slogan of "Don't be shy, taste this pie" more effective since a taste is possible without buying anything. The Pie Man of D.C.'s business concept is simple, selling pies, however, he approaches the task with a unique creativity and enthusiasm that makes a simple concept an innovative and unique business.
